The organizations running projects of the Information Technology (IT) have a constant work in defining the estimates of project activities for all human resources of the team. This task, as well as costly, usually is done in a manual way and without the aid of historical data, which contributes with the high number of errors in these estimates. The routine errors in estimatescontribute to the delay of the schedule, causing other negative effects for the project, as increased costs and reduced reliability of the client with the organization. The objective of this article is conducting a study about classical methods of forecasting, seeking a mechanism who can be adopted to perform time estimates in human resource allocation in IT projects. A historical project database was designed to evaluate the use of these methods in real scenarios of a software factory. As a result, we show a system based on time series method who obtained estimates with more than 100% gain over the current method of organization. With that, the projects used for analysis were completed in less time, which also resulted in reduction of the final cost of the project.
