THE ROUND COURTYARD OF THE ACADEMY OF ARTS BUILDING IN SAINT-PETERSBURG AS A SYSTEM OF THE ACADEMIC QUARTER’S PUBLIC SPACES: PAGES FROM HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT PROSPECTS

Abstract

The article considers for the first time the issue of inclusion of the Round Courtyard’s space into the system of public spaces of the Academic Quarter, examines the role of the Round Courtyard in the visual and spatial perception of the architectural composition of the Academy of Arts building in St. Petersburg. Based on archival documents, many of which are published for the first time, the historical development of the courtyard’s architectural and landscape composition is retraced. The functioning and operation of the yard at different times is reviewed. The question is raised about the degree to which the modern use of the courtyard meets the needs of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, and the preferred options of the Round Courtyard’s spatial development are identified.
