Regulating Physicians: Professional Authority, Licensure, and Certification
Abstract
Abstract This resource is a lecture for first-year medical student discussing professionalism, professional authority, and the limitations of organizations such as state medical boards and specialty boards. The lecture was originally presented during the Introduction to Health Care course at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. As far as the author is aware, no similar resource exists in a preclinical course for medical students. Connecting professionalism in medical school with clinical behavior in practice is vital to producing ethical physicians who constantly strive to provide high-quality care.
