CIVIL-MILITARY RELATIONS: A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK UNDERPINNING MILITARY INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICAL AFFAIRS
Abstract
Abstract : This study seeks to understand the military phenomenon more objectively through a framework that facilitates such understanding. The nature of these relationships determines the extent, type, and factors of military intervention in public affairs. It focuses on examining the conflicts arising from the interdependence between the armed forces and society in general, and the government in particular, such as attempts by the military to exert greater influence on the political decision-making process and guide the major choices of society. Examples of such conflicts include the relationship between military and political leadership and the methods of cooperation between the two in implementing the state's public policies, especially in the area of defense. Keywords: Civil-military relations, military, politics, military coup, military intervention in political affairs, civilian control of the armed forces.
