Thoracoscopic Repair of a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Abstract
Abstract Introduction Standard podcasts are popular means of sharing information via the Internet. Podcasts, however, have limited value in radiology and surgery education because content is limited to audio. This resource seeks to realize the potential for this medium as an education tool by implementing the related but much more robust enhanced podcast. An enhanced podcast is a podcast that allows images and video to be displayed in time with the audio. It also permits embedded URL links and the addition of chapter markers to the audio file. Methods This resource is a 25-minute enhanced podcast on thoracoscopic repair of a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and is the product of a joint collaboration between radiology and surgery. Radiological findings are first outlined, followed by a detailed description of the surgical procedure. Chapter markers are included within so the learner can easily skip forward to go back to sections of interest, making education both interactive and efficient. The presentation can also be downloaded to a portable digital device so learning can be mobile. Results Both surgery and radiology residents rotating through our pediatric hospital have been encouraged to view this enhanced podcast. We have received encouraging comments from both cohorts. Examples of this feedback include: “What a great way to learn about surgical procedures!”, “I found the radiology and surgery correlation particularly helpful.”, and “This is a wonderful amalgam of technology and medical education. Bravo!” Discussion We have chosen CDH as one of our first topics, because it is a condition commonly encountered in the pediatric population. By providing both radiologic and surgical perspectives, we hope to offer a more complete understanding of this common condition.
