Nuevas perspectivas numismáticas en torno a la promoción del Municipium Vrbs Victrix Osca
Abstract
The article offers an iconographic study of the denarii minted by Gnaeus Domitius Calvinus in Osca, and of the values included in the first civic issue, arguing that its legal promotion and the concession of the terms Vrbs and Victrix may have occurred in the context of the second journey of Augustus to Hispania, in 27-24 B.C., but in connection with the important role it played as a centre for the military operations of Calvinus. Furthermore, we justify the opinion that the traditional image of the lancer rider was subjected to an intense process of redefinition which, due to being linked to the victory over the Cerretani, became the foundational civic emblem of the new municipium linked to Augustus. This made possible its permanence up to the reign of Caligula as the characteristic emblem of the mint at Osca.
