«Não é o sangue de Cristo» as disputas entre a Igreja e as Beatas na questão Religiosa de Juazeiro (1891-1893)
Abstract
This paper analyzes the confrontation generated in the called Juazeiro’s «Religious Question» when the host bled in the mouth of the Maria de Araújo (1862-1914) during a communion given by the Father Cícero Romão Batista (1844-1934). The Diocese of Ceará has considered the case as a farce and categorically that the blood flowed from the host wasn’t the Christ’s blood. In contrast, a group of priests and medical experts who analyzed the blood has positioned in favor of the supernatural phenomenon. We aimed to examine the two speeches, considering then within the political and religious context of the ninetheenth century.
