INVERSION AND THE USE OF REMITTANCES: THE CASE OF LA RIELERA
Abstract
The present work aims to show the use of remittances,successful, to invest in productive projects. The remittancesare used mainly for migrant´s family’s subsistence, and alow percentage in investment and savings. A successfulcase of investment of remittances is is the enterprise “LaRielera” located in Urireo, Municipality of Salvatierra,Guanajuato. This enterprise was created using theremittances of one of its members from United States.Currently this enterprise employs three or four persons (alsothe family) to produce nopal as vegetable and to packagingnopal. The work is organized as follows: first are presentedthe history of migration and remittances in Mexico. In thenext section we present data about remittances inGuanajuato and we emphasize the remittances send toSalvatierra, were is located “La Rielera”, also the use ofthem, were we agree with the findings in other studiesbecause the remittances are mainly used for familysubsistence and a very low portion to investment. Inother section we show the case of La Rielera as away of use of remittances in the investments. Finally wepresent some reflections. While remittances are one of themost important sources of national income and of somefamilies, in particular, we consider that the localdevelopment of sending regions must not be sustained inthem.
