Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm presenting as appendiceal intussusception in a 16 year old male
Abstract
Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare in pediatric patients. We report a case of a 16-year old male who presented with abdominal pain with concern for appendiceal mucocele. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed an incarcerated appendiceal intussusception into the cecum secondary to low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), a tumor often found in older adults. Complete resection was achieved through laparoscopic ileocecectomy, and the patient recovered uneventfully and did not require adjuvant therapy. Classification and appropriate management of appendiceal neoplasms is still widely debated for adult patients, and there are even fewer recommendations on management of pediatric cases in the literature. We review current appendiceal neoplasm classification systems and describe the need for consensus on the treatment and surveillance of pediatric appendiceal neoplasms.
