Medicine Across the Barricade
Abstract
Abstract Introduction This simulation places Tactical Medical Professionals (TMPs), such as prehospital personnel or physicians, in an operational hostage scenario requiring medical expertise and communication with a bystander who may or may not have medical experience. This “medicine across the barricade” situation forces them to assess and treat an injured patient over the phone with the help of a layperson. Methods The module includes a simulation case file, a PowerPoint presentation, standardized direct observation tool, and debriefing points. The simulation room contains a high-fidelity manikin and a phone to communicate with the layperson. Learners are debriefed upon completion of the scenario and complete an assessment form. Results The participating learners rated the scenario with an average score of 4.8 on a five-point Likert scale with only positive subjective comments from the participants. Discussion This simulation is being incorporated as an ongoing training module for the residents in our program involved in tactical medical support as well as for non-physician medics in our community. There has never been an educational device created that allowed tactical medics to experience administering medicine across the barricade that would allow them to assess their skills and evaluate protocols in a safe and effective environment.
