The century of humiliation is a phrase steeped in the Chinese culture and mentality, which denotes the period when Western powers and Japan intervened in China. The Chinese believe that it began during the first Opium War in 1839, when England invaded southern China, and ended with the liberation of China from foreign troops and the victory of the Chinese Communists who proclaimed the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The Chinese people perceive this century of humiliation as the only century in their history when China was attacked, bullied and divided by foreign powers, which affected their national dignity.
