In 1607, a theological conference took place at Lorges in Beauce between the Jacobin Jean Journé and the pastor of the Church of Lorges-Marchenoir, Samuel de Chambaran who came from a family of the nobility of Romorantin. It is mainly known to us through the publication that same year of an account of this “dispute” by Samuel de Chambaran. This debate, provoked by the clergyman who has already argued on several occasions with the pastor of Châteaudun, takes place in a classic framework for such confrontations, like those studied by Émile Kappler. However, the theological conference did not come to an end due to its ban by the magistrate, the « bailli » of Beaugency, who feared sectarian unrest. The same is true of the different themes that are proposed during this controversy: it is a very classic debate around the questions of the mass, the Eucharist or purgatory. Nevertheless, while often following the method of Jean Gontery, it is the ecclesiastic who leads the debates in such circumstances, during this conference it is certainly the pastor who has the hand despite his little experience in this domain.
