Speaking Theologically of Animal Rights
Abstract
Is moral agency necessary (or constitutive of) moral standing/rights? This essay argues no, particularly with regard to non-human animals, who deserve both moral rights and to be ascribed moral patient status. Despite the lacuna existing within it, the Catholic moral theological tradition can make room within its arms this ascription of rights; this claim is argued by way of analogy from human to non-human animals
