PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the PAPS step-test according to using palpation and heart rate monitor. METHODS A total 417 (male: 213, female: 204) in middle and high school students participated in this study. The maximum oxygen uptake was measured by GXT and the PAPS step test was performed. The recovery heart rate was measured by palpation and the heart rate monitor after step-test. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the maximum oxygen uptake and PEI was calculated to confirm the validity of the PAPS step test. In order to solve the problems identified by the analysis, regression analysis was performed to develop the maximum oxygen uptake estimation equation using the PAPS step test protocol. RESULTS PEI of PAPS step-test were respectively with palpation .190 (.001), .169 (.009) with heart-rate monitor .275 (.001), .371 (<.001) showed lower validity. To solve this problem, the equation of the following was developed; VO2max=63.045 -9.477 (sex)+ 0.632 (age) -0.722 (BMI) -0.080 (60 seconds recovery heart rate) based on recovery time real heart rate using heart rate monitor). Gender has a value of 0 for men and 1 for women. CONCLUSIONS Because of the low validity of step test which is one of the PAPS cardiopulmonary endurance test methods, fairness of the evaluation can be an issue. Therefore, developed equation in this study is recommended for better estimation of maximum oxygen uptake of middle and high school students.
