Large acceleration under highly concentrated conditions: Synthesis of chalcones using a small amount of DMF or [emim]N(CN)2

A variety of chalcones were synthesized by the reactions between benzaldehydes and acetophenones catalyzed by Ba(OH)2. The reactions in the presence of a small amount of DMF or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([emim]N(CN)2) were faster than those of the corresponding solvent-free reactions except the synthesis of nitrochalcones. The reaction rates using [emim]N(CN)2 were larger than those of DMF.
