The presence and motivation of indigenous place names the streets of Dourados/MS
Abstract
Given the significant presence of indigenous groups in the municipality of Dourados/MS, this research aimed to determine to what extent it is possible to find aspects of the indigenous culture in the street names of the urban area of the municipality, especially concerning the linguistic origin of toponyms. In addition, we tried to verify which motivational causes are more frequent in those toponyms. To collect and analyze data that constituted the corpus of this research, we based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Dick (1990, 1992). As an example of what we found with the research, we can cite the fact that words of indigenous origin and other references to indigenous groups appear in a small percentage of the urban toponymy.
