This study is about storytelling. Storytelling is a good way to increase students vocabulary and character building. Purpose of this research was to find out whether teaching vocabulary and character through storytelling was effective. The method of this research was a Classroom Action Research in collaborative. Subject of the research was the 28 students of grade VII Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 1 Barito Selatan in Academic Year 2019/2020. There were three steps in this classroom action research. The first step was pre-test of vocabulary given before the action was done. The second step was action which consisted of three activities of teaching by implementing storytelling. The third step was post-test and answering questionnaire. Observation sheet was used to know the students character building after learning using story telling. The data were analyzed in percentage scale (%). Based on the data analysis, it could be seen that there was a significant improvement in the result of the students post-test of vocabulary and character. The average achievement of the students pre-test was 60.62 % and posttest 96.25%. The main factor affecting this improvement was the students interest in storytelling. Therefore, it can be suggested that the use of storytelling can be an alternative way to teach vocabulary. As conclusion, this result hopefully would motivate English teachers to use storytelling in teaching English vocabulary for high school students.
