It is common in Brazil and around the world the use of pesticides in agriculture. In 1950 intense use of pesticides began in the United States, with the so-called 'Green Revolution', aiming to modernize agriculture and increaseproductivity. In general, these substances serve to prevent or combat some kind of pest in crops. However, when improperly used they can cause risks to the health of the population and the environment, thus becoming a public health problem. Given this, this research aimed to perform a literature review about the consequences for health and the environment, resulting from the indiscriminate use of pesticides. The research is qualitative in nature, by means of bibliographic survey on Google Scholar® and Scielo platforms. The use of pesticides has been around for a long time, being used in all Brazilian regions, including the Northeast and the State of Alagoas, where there are two very strong and representative crops that require the use of pesticides, which is tobacco growing, present in the municipality of Arapiraca, and the sugar cane plantation that is widely distributed throughout the state. Thus, such knowledge should be broughtto the general population and also prepared by farmers to handle these products properly.
