Quite apart from whatever adaptations may have been made of it, for a number of major 18th-century French writers Don Quixote raised some basic issues regarding the handling and the thrust of the novel, and in particular the tension between character and narrator. From that point of view, the ultimate fate that Cervantes reserved for his heroes constitutes a lesson on which Marivaux, Rousseau, Diderot and Laclos each pondered in his own way.
