The burden of injury in Ilam, Iran

Objective (s): Injury is a major public health problem in Iran. The aim of this study was to estimate the burden of injury in Ilam (a province I west), Iran in 2011.Methods: This was a second analysis of the death registration data. Using Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and life table of Ilam population, the burden of injury was calculated. Results: In 2011, there were a total of 12002.7 years life lost (YLL) due to premature mortality due to injuries in Ilam province, the average of 21.5 per 1000 population. Globally, men had the larger share of burden than women (69.7% compared to 30.3%). Across all age groups, distribution of burden showed predominant of 15 to 35 age groups with 68.4%. The highest proportion of burden in men and women was due to road traffic injuries and suicides, respectively. Conclusion: The study revealed that the injuries imposed a significant burden especially on youth in Ilam population. Thus, designing and implementation of effective programs regarding prevention and control of injuries is required.
