Un terremoto “esagerato”. Effetti reali ed effetti apparenti del sisma del 1693

Abstract

Il presente contributo si propone di prendere in esame il grande fenomeno tellurico che nel 1693 colpì duramente il Val di Noto, analizzandone la portata materiale e immateriale dei suoi effetti distruttivi sul più ampio territorio siciliano. In modo particolare, questo lavoro – alla luce di una vasta pluralità di testimonianze storiche – mira a rivelare il reale impatto che l’episodio sismico ebbe su Taormina e la sua comunità, discernendo tra attestazioni autentiche e ricostruzioni degli eventi influenzate da successive interpretazioni esogene. This contribution aims to examine the major seismic phenomenon that struck the Val di Noto hard in 1693, analyzing both the material and immaterial extent of its destructive effects on the broader Sicilian territory. In particular, this work – in light of a wide array of historical testimonies – seeks to uncover the true impact that the seismic event had on Taormina and its community, distinguishing between genuine attestations and reconstructions of events influenced by subsequent exogenous interpretations.
