Factors affecting doctors’ intention to continue working after retirement in the hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City

This study is conducted with the objectives to identify factors that are affecting the degree of doctors’ intentions to continue working after retirement in the hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and to suggest some managerial implications to help hospital leaders make programs, and policies appropriate to encourage doctors to continue working after retirement. The study is conducted through two phases which are qualitative research (experts interview method: Directors, leaders working in human resources at hospitals) and quantitative analysis (surveying 200 doctors aged 50 to 57 years old women and 55 to 62 years old men in inner hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City). Results from the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that: The factors of meaningful work, health, support at work, and job features directly affected the intention to continue working after retirement. In which, health has the strongest influence and meaningful work is the weakest. And of the two factors affecting meaningful work, working conditions have a much stronger impact than motivation.
