SENSE POTENTIAL OF THE CONCEPT “LOVE” IN UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

A cognitive analysis of the content of the concept “love” in the Ukrainian language was carried out. The concept “love” in the Ukrainian language reveals a complex semantic structure presented by the following meanings: 1) a deep feeling of cordial affection, amicability to someone or something (people, family, God, homeland etc.; 2) a deep feeling of heart attraction to a person of different sex, love; 3) interest in something, preference for something. Besides the above mentioned meanings, the historical dictionaries also reveals the following meanings of word “love” as “kindness to someone”, “tenderness”, “harmony”. Paradigmatic relations (synonyms) of word “love” in the language system complement the selected meanings giving them the semantic, stylistic, expressive, emotional and functional tones. Ukrainian proverbs provide additional meanings superimposed on the nuclear part of the analyzed concept. The word “love” is characterized by such connotative meanings as “inner, spiritual nature”, “kinship of souls”, “irrationality”, “uncontrolled emotion”, “intensity”, “value” etc. Further analysis of the functioning of the analyzed concept in different contexts creates the perspective of our study.
