Simple Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

Abstract

This paper is a review of recent research on simple addition and subtraction word problems. The purpose of this review is to update the Arabic library and to inform mathematics teachers and educators about the renewed interest in this area especially in the last ten to fifteen years. The review centered on the following topics: language variables: mathematical open sentences that represent the problems; problem formats; semantic structure; young children's strategies; possible effect of the present research activities on the future mathematics curriculum and method of instruction.
