A specialist in the modern history of Rwanda, Florent Piton explains the heuristic advantage in the hypothesis of the precedent in the study of mass crimes, beyond essential methodological prudence. In studying the history of mass violence in the longue durée, he urges us not to neglect, and on the contrary to fully consider, the role of antecedents in the genesis of such crimes, as in Rwanda for the Tutsi genocide of 1994, preceded by several episodes of significant collective violence in 1959 and 1962-1963.
