This paper describes landscape areas locally known as flood-prone lowlands, found in southeastern Campeche, Mexico. Functionally, these are not restricted to cumulative plains covered with flooded soils (gleysols) and waterborne vegetation ("palo de tinte"), as suggested in the past. This study demonstrates that these landscape areas are closely linked and correlated to geoforms and adjacent ecosystems. In order to support these correlations, all landscape components are described, and the importance and ecological role of vegetation as a biological indicator of the system's dynamics are highlighted.
