OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF HEART: MANAGEMENT CHALLENGS OF A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY BASED ON THE PERCEPTION OF THEIR MANAGERS

Abstract

This study seeks to identify how managers from a public federal university assess their institution management making use of a websurvey answered by 272 respondents. Eight dimensions were evaluated with a number of closed questions likert style. The results suggest that managers have a positive perspective on most dimensions assessed. The critical areas are building and personal safety and physical structure. Managers also regard their performance as satisfactory specially for being able to deal with problems they face, for knowing their work team and for seeking to qualify for their daily activities. Managers also identify problems with shortage of people to do the work, lack of proper communication, poor infrastructure and poor quality on handling maintenance services. Overall, managers do not feel responsible for the problems identified but they regard themselves as high skilled to perform their tasks suggesting an attributional bias.
