Bearing in mind the importance of establishing the profile of the community, this descriptive study aimed to classify the families in the area served by a Health Center in Londrina, in the state of Paraná, using the Coelho Risk Scale. The analysis of 889 A files from the Primary Care Information System showed that 11.2% of the families presented some risk, with biological factors, hypertension and diabetes predominating; and social factors, related to there being one or more residents per room, or unemployment, a significant difference occurring between the micro-areas investigated. The Risk Scale could be strengthened by incorporating other situations, already agreed upon by primary care, such as age below one or over 60, and pregnancy, among others. It is important for the Family Health Strategy teams to use a method of classifying families, but also to include the assessment and monitoring of these situations and to verify the quality of the notes and the updating of the A files.
