The essay aims to investigate, from the start of a new system of public school in Italy after Unity and till the early twentieth century, the development of women’s education and the rising access of women to masterly studies aimed at preparing the practice of teaching in elementary schools. The survey, based on documentary and narrative sources, highlights both the emancipatory aspects of the phenomenon and the inherent cultural and social risks.
