In Germany the challenge of finding a final disposal site for storing high-level nuclear waste has been accompanied by historically grown conflicts along with highly emotional commitment. From an ethnographic perspective at the interface of nuclear geography, environmental sociology and further social scientific research in the area of nuclear waste management, the contribution investigates the relationship between the formalized character of the ongoing process of site selection and the emotional character of civic participation and its discursive and performative qualities. Even though emotions appear to be marginalized in the procedure of site selection they become relevant as resources in the sense of discursive artefacts and for performing participation and therefore engagement in interaction.
