The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the agronomic performance of maize cultivars with contrasting features (a simple hybrid – AG-9010 and a variety – BR 473), in three row widths (40, 60 and 80 cm) and three population densities (40, 60 and 80 thousand plants for hectare). The experiments were carried out in off-season cultivation (2000 and 2001), in Jaboticabal, SP. For the agronomic components, both row widths and population densities caused alterations in the plants behavior of both cultivars. The narrowest row (40 cm) showed the greatest average of productivity for both cultivars. For the population densities, 80000 plants for hectare was the population that showed the greatest productivity to the hybrid (AG-9010). The greatest productivity to the variety (BR 473) was around 70 thousand plants per hectare.
