The archaeology of handicap is a new approach for which still little is known. If the study of paleopathology now goes hand in hand with funerary archaeology and osteo-archaeology the study of handicap and invalidating pathologies remains marginal and unequally regarded according to location, chronology and the interest of academics. The aim is to underline the compatibility between this new area of research, the obligations of osteo-archaeology and the benefits of a national enquiry that is diachronic and interdisciplinary. A database will be designed within an interpretive consensual framework and that can be adapted to overcome restrictions in order to encourage receptive research into the care received by the handicapped within their own communities.
