Abstract

Writing the history of Sūfism with its particular or universal issues is one of the biggest issues facing the academy. Kenan Göçer’s new study titled What Did Yunus Emre Actually Say? is important in that it contains the possibilities of a new reading of the history of Sūfism. In this study, I will evaluate Göçer’s work as a case study, address some problems in the writing of Sūfi history, and finally offer some suggestions. Accordingly, I will point to archival historiography as a sine qua non for an interdisciplinary study on the history of Sūfism. However, I will point out that while relying on archival documents, the internal integrity of Sūfism should never be ignored.
