Highlights • Social movements progress through three stages: emergence, coalescen ce, mainstream. • Biophilic design emerged as a social movement primarily driven by five motivators. • Successful trials, multiple benefits and strategic policy helped the coalescence. • Learning from these motivators and drivers assists with creating a framework for mainstreaming. • Multi-sector collaboration including government is needed for urban planning and policy delivery structures.
