La medicina de Estado
Abstract
This article reviews some of the institutions and texts that describe the so-called ‘alliance’ between medical knowledge and the Spanish Monarchy at the end of the Ancien Régime, at a time when the ‘science of government’ assumed the ambitious tasks of surveillance and intervention. This marks the beginning of a ‘State Medicine’ (from the German “Staatsmedizine”) which included forensic medicine, medical police and preventive medicine.
