Abstract This was a basic study on design and planning from the perspective of the relationship between a site and interior and exterior architectural spaces. The purpose of this study was to clarify the spatial composition of the front yard and site layout in relation to extrinsic and intrinsic factors, focusing on architecture, gardens, and sites. Additionally, the spaces of the Daitokuji and Myoshinji temples in Kyoto, Japan, were considered cases of basic study on architecture and gardens on a site. Through typological analysis and using the survey drawings, the following observations were made: (1) There are six types of Honbou and Tacchu site arrangements; (2) the board fences and buildings of the Kyakuden and Kuri comprise the front gardens; (3) every site arrangement in the Honbou and Tacchu consists of six elements; and (4) the spatial arrangement of gardens facilitates adjustments and correlations between intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This study could be applied to modern architectural designs to investigate the composition of architecturally limited and coherent exterior spaces.
