Abstract

Which kind of knowledge requires the investigation on the Southeast Asian City? In his writings on Bangkok and the Thai cities, Jean Baffie multiplies the viewpoints, the scales of time and space, using his unusual erudition in order to put in resonance the words for city and those naming a city, founding narratives and popular imagery, physical space and social practices. Following Jean Baffie’s steps in exploring the Thai city, its places and words, the reader of this article is invited to discover, with this singular itinerary through fragments of texts, the original construction of a body of analytical knowledge on the social spaces in contemporary Southeast Asia.
