The Historical Dictionary of Roman Surnames, a provisional title that has been replaced by the acronym PATROM (Patronymia romanica), is intended to be a "European project involving the cooperation of research centres in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Its aim is "to establish a representative dictionary of Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese surnames, with historical and linguistic explanations. Onomastic research remains a poor relation of linguistics, especially anthroponymy. Given the too often confidential and scattered nature of research in this field, bringing together anthroponymists from the various Roman countries in a single project can help to (re)launch this branch of linguistics.
