Foreword of Special section: “Monogenetic Volcanism, environment and Society”

Abstract

Monogenetic volcanism is a worldwide phenomenon that occurs in all tectonic and geographic environments, representing an important manifestation of the Earth´s internal dynamics that causes the formation of numerous volcanic edifices distributed over large areas, the monogenetic fields. The volcanic activity within these fields is generally of low intensity and with relatively long repose periods between successive events, favoring human settlements on the fertile soils it produces and their abundant natural resources, and causing a distributed volcanic hazard difficult to assess. With the increase in human population, the threats of new eruptions to society and highly productive agricultural areas are increasing every day.
