Cervical vaginal mixed infections in gynecology: unresolved therapeutic issues

Abstract

K.R. Bondarenko Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow, Russian Federation Significant progress in molecular biology since the early 2000s has improved our knowledge of cervical vaginal infections greatly. The paper covers important and unresolved issues on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mixed infections of female reproductive system in outpatient gynecological practice in Russia. Pharmacotherapy regimens for bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis approved by Russian, US, and European clinical protocols are compared. Advantages and disadvantages of various treatment approaches to the most common variant of mixed infection (bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis) are discussed. Safety and efficacy of various drugs are compared on the basis of fundamental and clinical data accumulated over the last two decades. Suppositories with metronidazole (500 mg) and miconazole (100 mg) for 7 days are recommended as the first-line drug of choice for bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis.
