D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak's Novel Spring Thunderstorms in the Literary Context

The article deals with the main issues and themes of D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak's novel Spring Thunderstorms (1893). The novel belongs to the genre of the traditional family novel or the bildungsroman. The author studies the connections between Mamin’s novel and the works of his predecessors and contemporaries, in particular the novel by F. M. Reshetnikov One's Own Bread. Similarly to Mamin, Reshetnikov depicted the life of common people in a small provincial town, the life of a girl trying to find her way. The author studies the toponymy in Mamin-Sibiryak's novel. The literary context is represented by works of the 1880s writers, such as A. P. Chekhov, M. N. Albov and others. The article points out the distinctive character of the themes of bureaucracy and provincial intelligentsia in the novel Spring Thunderstorms, as well as states that is reflects the interests of the middle reading class of Russia.
