FEATURES OF THE INDIVIDUAL STYLE OF TRANSLATOR’S PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY: THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY
Abstract
The article is devoted to the issue of determining the features of the individual style of the professional activity of a translator. The results of a pilot study are presented, the purpose of which is to determine students’ ideas about the content and components of the individual style of translator’s professional activity and the factors influencing the peculiarities of its formation. It is noted that the participants of the survey were students studying in the educational-professional program “Translation (English)” of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education in the specialty 035 Philology at Alfred Nobel University. The author describes the procedure of questionnaire development (determining the content of the questionnaire, choosing the right type of questions, determining the number and order of questions) and processing the survey results (assigning a code number to each questionnaire, determining the frequency of each statement on all the questions). The pilot study allowed the author to draw some conclusions: to find out who, in the opinion of the respondents, will find it easier to act as a translator (i.e. whether there are gender preferences), to identify the most important personal qualities needed for a translator, to identify factors influencing the individual style in the professional activity of a translator and the features of its formation. The study showed that: the majority of respondents believe that both men and women can be translators equally; the respondents consider as the main personal qualities of translators their communicativeness, persistence, noise immunity, stress resistance, attraction, reflexivity, emotional intelligence, objectivity. The respondents identified the main features that should be taken into account in the formation of the individual style of professional activity of a translator: 1) inclinations (potential opportunities that contribute to the development of most anatomical, some physiological and individual mental properties of a person), 2) individual properties (gender, age, individual psychological properties),3) abilities (general and special) of an individual, 4) social factors (influence of the group, departments that provide training; living conditions), 5) conditions of activity. Based on the results, the author identified and characterized the prospects for further research, namely: to identify and justify the pedagogical conditions for the formation of the individual style of professional activity of a future translator in the process of professional training
