Pediatric deep neck space abscesses are increasing in incidence, most children presenting with deep neck space abscesses respond to medical and/or surgical management, including intravenous antibiotics and surgical incision and drainage. However, despite adequate treatment, some patients may develop complications. Complications of pediatric deep neck space infections can be severe. Such complications include mediastinitis, internal jugular vein thrombosis, carotid artery aneurysm or rupture, and airway obstruction.
