Education and socio-economic development
Abstract
In this paper we perform a critical analysis of the notion of development from a socio-historic viewpoint. We find that this concept is not only synonymous with economic growth, but rather is an interdisciplinary term in which educational, social, political and cultural aspects also interrelate. Moreover, having analysed the current socioeconomic situation, we conclude that it is time to move towards a new growth model, in our case focusing on fostering an entrepreneurial culture, where education ceases to have a purely instrumental value to serve the interests of a “privileged few” and becomes the driving force for human development with progress, equality and social justice.
