What we attempt to do in this paper is to apply an experimental method to geolinguistics. This method is inspired by Labov’s method, which uses phonetic variables as markers of social hierarchy. The aim is to use statistics to determine the degree of difference (or similarity) between dialects or sub-dialects of the Breton language, with the help of the Linguistic Atlas of Lower Brittany and a computer programme specially designed for social science research. Only phonetic data are analysed, but this already shows surprising links between linguistic and socio-cultural elements.
