Metaphorical Perceptions of Doctors Literary and Doctors Candidates Regarding Literature /Hekim Edebiyatçılar ve Hekim Adaylarının Edebiyata İlişkin Metaforik Algıları
Abstract
In this study, answers to the questions of “Who are our literati, whose main professions are medicine, from the Tanzimat era to the present?”, “With what and how do medical school students associate the concept of literature?” and “Who are the writers and poets among them?” were sought. In the qualitative study, document analysis and phenomenology methods were used and the data were analyzed using content analysis. The study group consisted of 50 medical doctor candidates studying in medical schools from different universities. As a resultf of the document analysis, information 76 doctor-litterateurs was given and 26 metaphors associated with literature were identified. Expressions like “antidote, labor pain, and mental illness” were expressions possibly reflecting the physician’s point of view.. Among the medical students’ opions regarding the author’s, where two were actual physicians (Anton Çehvo, Engin Geçtan), a total of 32 different authors were cited. Twelve of these authors were Turkish and 20 were foreign.. Dostoyevsky, as a foreign author and Yaşar Kemal, as a Turkish author, were cited the most by the participants. In the section where the doctor candidates indicated their “poet” views, 28 different poets were mentioned. Twenty-three of these poets were Turkish and 5 were foreign. Among the poets, Necip Fazıl, Nazım Hikmet, Cemal Süreya, and Atilla İlhan were mentioned equally.
