Abstract

The specially ironic writing style of the author of The Scholars has long made critics mistake Zhang Shaoguang as the ‘positive’ character, the ‘positve ideal’. The mistaken identity has certainly been an obstacle to enjoying the eminent tactics of self- narrating by the novelist. Consequently, critical circles have made no headway with realizing the genuine theme of the novel. In a new comprehension, this paper is an attempt to re-realize the image of the character and the ideas of the author.
