The growth of the root system of ten vegetative apple rootstocks (5 clones substrate M9: T337; Burgmer 984; Fleuron 56; Pajam®1 Lancep and Pajam®2 Cepiland, York 9, Mark (MAC 9), M26, Supporter 4 and MM106) was analyzed during 2013, in two modified soil substrates in a controlled container. We analyzed the number, total and average length of the first grade roots as well as the total and average number of the second grade root branching. The results show that in all tested rootstocks, the total length of the root is greater in the substrate 2 (combination of garden soil, peat and sand) in relation to the substrate 1 (the upper layers of pseudogley soil), except for rootstocks York and M9 B984. The number of the second grade root branching in all rootstocks is higher in the substrate 2, in addition to rootstocks York and Pajam 2. The results of analysis of root growth of vegetative apple rootstocks are the first studies of the substrate growth in BiH.
