Die Ukraine 1848-1918 – Von den ersten politischen Strömungen bis zur Nationsbildung
Abstract
Motivated by the political turmoil in Ukraine that began in 2013, the author reflects on the country’s political history and its development during the ‘long’ 19th century. She examines regional differences in cultural and political conceptions as well as the differences between urban and rural communities. Furthermore, she outlines the origins and molding of political parties – and their foreign affiliations – showing whether or not a successful ‘nation building’ occured. Menderetska also offers an excursion into the contemporary conception of history and the political tendencies in Ukrainian school books and the Ukrainian educational system.
