The composition and the sanitary condition of soil are factors of importance to public health, with direct and indirect influence over the pollution of surface and ground water, air and food products. To display the current state of soil contamination at the level of the Republic of Serbia in the present paper have been used the results of tests of soil quality within several projects of different scope, and available results of soil quality control within the urban-industrial environment of major cities, where the monitoring has been provided by local governments. The research results show that in Serbia there are sites with extreme pollution of soil, which can to a greater or lesser extent have negative health effects, so it is necessary to execute their remediation. Local soil contamination is present in areas of intense industrial activity, inadequate landfill sites, mines, and in places of different accidents.
